Tech Sales Resume Tips: What Recruiters Look for First

Tech Sales Resume Tips: What Recruiters Look for First
On this page

Recruiters and hiring managers read a tech sales resume for one thing first: a number against a target. Not your job title, not your years of experience, not the logo at the top of the page.

If your attainment isn’t visible in the first few lines of each role, your resume slides down the pile, however strong the rest is. That holds for an SDR with one year behind them and an AE with ten. An eye-tracking study by Ladders found recruiters spend an average of 7.4 seconds on a first scan.

Key Takeaways

  • Put a quota attainment figure against every role, in the first lines of each entry.
  • Replace duties with outcomes: revenue against target, deal size, sales cycle and rank.
  • Cut anything that would read the same on a competitor’s resume.

What recruiters look for first

  • An attainment figure per role. “118% of quota, FY25” beats “consistently exceeded targets”.
  • Deal size and sales cycle. These tell a recruiter which roles you fit before they’ve spoken to you.
  • Rank, where you have it. “#3 of 24 AEs” carries more weight than attainment alone.
  • Team context. One of 20 AEs or one of three? Both are fine, but it changes how a number reads.
  • Tools and methods, named. Salesforce, HubSpot, MEDDIC, Command of the Message. Name them in the role where you used them, not in a skills list at the bottom.

A recruiter should be able to picture your role, your market and your results before they pick up the phone.

If a recruiter has to hunt for your attainment figure, most won’t.

Where tech sales resumes fall down

Vague achievement language. “Drove significant pipeline growth” gives a recruiter nothing to work with. “Generated $1.2M in pipeline against a $900K target” tells them where you sit and gives them something to ask about.

Duties instead of outcomes. Cold calling, running demos and managing a CRM are things almost every candidate did. What separates you is the result: quota hit, deal size, retention, expansion.

Numbers buried in paragraphs. Dense blocks of text hide the figures that should be scannable. Our Quota-Crusher resume layout shows a format that puts them first.

A short stint with no context. A four-month role isn’t automatically a red flag, but leaving it unexplained invites a recruiter to assume the worst. One line fixes it: “Role made redundant after Series B restructure.”

A before and after you can copy

The example below is illustrative. Use your own numbers.

  • Before: Responsible for managing a pipeline of mid-market accounts and exceeding targets.
  • After: Closed $640K new ARR against a $520K target (123%), ranked #3 of 24 AEs. Average deal $38K, 45-day cycle.

Run every bullet through that test. If you can’t attach a number, ask whether the line earns its place.

Here’s how that plays out. Two AE candidates with similar backgrounds apply for the same mid-market role. One writes “Strong track record of exceeding targets”. The other writes “124% of a $600K quota in FY25, #2 of 11 AEs”. The second gets the call that week.

If your role isn’t quota-carrying

Customer success, marketing and RevOps candidates face the same scan with different numbers. Lead with the figure your manager was measured on:

  • Customer success: net revenue retention, renewal rate, expansion revenue, portfolio size.
  • Marketing and demand gen: pipeline sourced or influenced, cost per opportunity, conversion rates between stages.
  • RevOps: forecast accuracy, cycle time reduced, systems you owned and the change they made.

Cut anything that isn’t evidence

Every line costs scanning time. Cut objective statements, generic skills lists and duties every candidate in your role shares. Keep lines that carry a number, a tool or a decision you made.

If a bullet would read the same on a competitor’s resume, it’s filler. If the whole document feels tired, check whether your sales resume is outdated, and pair it with a short, targeted cover letter.

Quick answers

How long should a tech sales resume be? One page under five years of experience, two pages at most beyond that. Hiring teams skim first and read second.

Should I include a summary at the top? Only if it leads with a number. A generic summary wastes the top third of the page, which is the part that gets read most closely.
